For a start: the band name Scram C Baby doesn't
make any sense at all.
The first part could be the title of their favourite Laurel & Hardy movie.
The "C" is probably their favourite cord.
And baby ... well ..
What do you hear, when the band starts to play? As Dutch filmmaker Joy Hoes would say: "When I listen to Scram C Baby it's like a playground is raining all
over me." Or Menno Pot, music critic for a
Dutch newspaper: "They've got that explosive, dangerously on the edge
sound, but at the same time that complete authentic sense for children's
song-like melodies." Their latest cd The Thing That
Wears My Ring caused some confusion. Like the pop magazine The Music Maker put it: "It's a weird album, but
also an exceptionally good one." And even world's fashion magazine Elle spreads the word: "It's a lovely
record!"
The Thing That Wears My Ring was released in
2007. It's a record about a band and the music that keeps them together
and binds them like a ring. At the same time, thinking of The Thing That Wears My Ring some people would
imagine an engagement or marriage, others would picture a finger, and a
lonely soul would think of Frodo. That's all ok.
The album was recorded by the band's core: Frank
van Praag, Geert de Groot and John Cees Smit. Their former drummer having left
the band, they decided to leave their familiar way of making an album.
This time "the making of" was not situated in cold wasted practise
rooms, but in the warmth of their own homes. The way of writing songs
changed a lot, too. No rules and no restrictions: just switch on the
recorder and start making music. Sometimes they recorded the vocals
first and then later put down the rest. Other songs were just made
without any clue of voices or melodies: these were added at the final
stage. In short, the band recorded this cd like some happy kids at the
playground.
For performance on stage they found themselves some new musicians. In
their current live line-up the band explodes with the unmatched Leon Caren as additional guitar player, and with
a magic duo of switching drummers: Henk
Jonkers and Marit de Loos.
All together: Scram C Baby is a band from
Amsterdam, Holland. Last year the group celebrated the release of their
latest record The Thing That Wears My Ring:
an unsettling rollercoaster ride, full of weird samples, catchy pop
tunes and dirty Rock and Roll. Einfach horny.
